Great Lakes Now Update: Algal Blooms

Harmful algal blooms happen when excess nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorous get into our lakes. Add warmer temperatures and more direct sunlight into deeper parts of the lake, and they can grow into a gloppy green mess that can turn the local water supply toxic. Lake Erie experienced an algae crisis earlier this year. To help, the EPA is offering aid to target the area's toxic blooms.
